What led you to create Brooks Designer Homes?

I love the process of being able to create someone’s home from nothing. To see their dream home come to life, from materials arriving onsite and being converted into a family home, that always excites me.

Tell us about your professional life…

I started my trade apprenticeship in Lismore NSW, completed my qualifications and moved to Brisbane to explore a career in the building industry.

From here I progressed to working as a subcontractor to a number of building companies, advancing into a management role within several building companies and in 2002, I launched Brooks Designer Homes Pty Ltd.

The company has grown from strength to strength since then.

We have survived several years of intensely difficult times with the GFC and the Brisbane floods in 2011. There was little work available and we went back to our roots of doing renovations, kitchens, bathrooms and the occasional new home whenever the opportunity came our way.

It was because of this experience that we’re so adaptable and able carryout work in such a diverse range off skill sets and building areas. We managed to survive and thrive because of tough times.

How does your family influence the advice you give to clients building their dream home?

I have three boys of my own in primary and high school so I understand the need for practical designs. So, we build stunning homes but they must be functional. For instance, with more young professional families coming into the housing market, we are seeing home designs starting to change. Quite often home studies built near the kitchen area so that a parent can oversee their children doing homework, while they prepare an evening meal.

How do you think the industry has changed?

In days gone by builders could run their business from the back of a ute.

The industry has become so competitive that to be a successful building company you need to have a wide range of personal skills. On top of your professional building experience, you need to have good people skills, a basic accounting ability, the ability to manage a team with military like precision and sometimes to be a marriage counsellor for your clients!

Australians take immense pride in their dream home, from federation homes to the hip or gable roofed Queenslander to our unique interpretation of the California bungalow or the 1960s brick veneer house, with every generation our housing has become more sophisticated and now more than ever we demand quality from builders not seen by previous generations.

What are the biggest rewards of your position?

Watching the reaction from my clients as they see their home come to life and the look on their face when we “hand over” the keys, is my biggest enjoyment.

What’s the best advice you can give someone building a home?

They need to go with their gut feeling when choosing a builder, do your research on the builder first to make sure that he is capable of building the style of home you are after, do a licence search with the QBCC then take notice of your first impressions.

You will need to be able to communicate freely with this person; you need to feel that you can trust them and that you feel comfortable around them. If you have any really negative feedback or don’t feel comfortable, walk away. Also, price shouldn’t dictate your decision. Many builders don’t quote for extra inclusions so watch out for “added” extras and be very confident that the price point you choose will deliver the quality build you deserve.

What are your favourite new trends?

Outdoor kitchens are very popular in the Queensland environment; outdoor entertainment areas with a kitchenette and possibly a television are also popular. It’s about having your own private relaxation area to unwind in away from the hustle and bustle of the Monday to Friday work environment. Everyone wants some element of a resort style area in the home, a parents retreat in the master bedroom, something that they would usually only experience when they are away on holidays.

Tell us about your current residence…

My family live on an 80 acre, cattle, Boer goat and Lucerne property at Wivenhoe Pocket in the Brisbane Valley near Fernvale. Our property is situated on the banks of the Brisbane River about 3km downstream of the Wivenhoe dam wall, a beautiful piece of heaven unless it’s being flooded.

My family breed Droughtmaster cattle and Boer goats. We show our Boer goats with great success throughout the Queensland show circuit. In 2016 we have been invited to exhibit at the Sydney Royal and compete in the National Championships.
